Our Tips for Buying a Bed

Our Tips for Buying a Bed

Choosing a new bed can be difficult at the best of times. Here are our top tips to help you choose the right bed.

Test the bed out in our showroom.
We are all made a little bit different, in size and shape, and this is why there are so many different choices for mattresses. The best way to find the bed that suits your body is to lie on a bed in our showroom. And we encourage people to take their time in choosing because beds typically last for about 10 years so it is an important decision.
Trust your Body
Our sales team are here to help explain the differences in each bed, and suggest the types of beds you might like. But your body is the best guide towards the right bed for you. Test the bed out by lying on your side for a few minutes to test how it feels on your hips and shoulders.
Understand the difference
We have 3 main types of mattresses. Foam - these can be standard foam or memory foam. These are suitable for bunks, Slat beds with curved slats and Adjustable beds where the feet or head raise up. Bonnell spring - the old coil spring system, cheaper range of mattresses, ok for lighter weights and occasional use. Pocket Spring - Each spring is individually supported so it reduces partner disturbance. As you go into the premium end of these mattresses the springs have various pressure zones, and there are different types of foam on the top of the mattress for a better feel.

Once you have chosen your bed these tips will help you get the most out of your mattress

Waterproof Mattress protectors are a must
We recommend any person looking to purchase a new mattress should consider purchasing a waterproof mattress protector. They do not make a noise (unlike the old kids mattress protectors), you cannot tell they are there and they are machine washable, and can be dried on a line or in a dryer. As you wash them you get rid of any skin cells and dust from your bed, which is great for those with allergies, as they reduce the chances of dust mites. The most important reason for choosing a water proof mattress protector over a regular cloth one is to keep the sweat from your body out of the mattress. All three types of mattress do not respond to moisture very well. Foam mattresses become heavy and hard, Bonnell springs tend to break down and Pocket springs will absorb the moisture into the foam and the springs resulting in a heavier mattress and less flexible springs.
Rotate your mattress once a month
If you have a new mattress then rotate the mattress once a month. (swapping head to foot) This means the heavier parts of your body are not on the same springs all the time. It evens up the use of the mattress and reduces the natural body indentations.
Keep the bag
When your new bed is delivered keep the bed bag. If you are ever moving house or painting your room it is very helpful to have a bag to fully seal the mattress. Bed bags are expensive to reorder, so it pays to keep yours handy.
If your bed is too firm
If your bed is a bit too firm we have 7cm memory foam mattress toppers. These can help soften the surface of the bed. But please be aware: If your bed is sagging in the middle we do not suggest a topper pad because this will make the sagging even worse. If the bed is sagging, it is time for a new one.
Trade in your old bed
It can be a hassle to get rid of your old bed. Rather than visiting the dump, or packing it away in the garage, why no trade in your bed. When you purchase a new bed, mention to our salesperson that you would like to have your old bed traded in. Then when our delivery guys deliver out the new bed they will take your old bed to Fletchers Trade it, or to St Johns Opportunity shop to be resold. This saves you the hassle of picking up a trailer and paying the dump fees or running a listing through trade me and it reduces waste. This is a free service we offer within our delivery area. Beyond that there are charitable agencies you can call to collect your bed.
